Bluestone Law Group Secures 1st Ever Childcare Tax Exemption in Cincinnati

Bluestone Law Group recently obtained a partial real property tax exemption on behalf of a childcare center in the Cincinnati area – the 1st ever issued by the Hamilton County Auditor.

The partial real property tax exemption for qualifying childcare centers was first passed into law in 2019 and, to date, few operators are aware of its existence. Those who have applied for the exemption either didn’t qualify or made one of several common mistakes in the exemption process and were denied the benefit.

The most important criterion is that the center must have children enrolled whose families receive public assistance. The percentage of children enrolled in the program who meet this requirement directly influences the amount of benefit for which the property owner is eligible. For example, if 25% – 49.9% of the children enrolled at a childcare center meet this requirement, the property could be eligible for a 25% property tax reduction. If 50%+ of the children meet this requirement, the property could be eligible for a 75% property tax reduction.*

Ohio’s tax laws are complex and the rules surrounding the various types of property tax exemptions are littered with stumbling blocks. Experienced attorneys familiar with the law around tax exemptions and incentives can look at individual situations and evaluate whether a property is a good candidate for a property tax exemption. Counsel can also represent and advise property owners through the tax exemption process.
